Breast biopsies involve the removal of tissue samples from suspicious areas identified by imaging techniques for microscopic examination. These suspicious areas have no equivalent in manual examination.
Under the guidance of radiological methods (ultrasound, mammography, or magnetic resonance imaging), a sufficient amount of tissue is removed from the suspicious area with various needles for pathological examination, without missing any tissue and with minimal harm to the patient.
In a case requiring histopathological diagnosis, the radiologist's role is to select and perform the biopsy procedure that is least harmful to the patient and provides the most information for the pathologist.
What types of needle biopsy methods are available?
- Fine needle aspiration biopsy
- Cutting needle biopsy (coarse needle, core, tru-cut biopsy)
- Vacuum biopsy
