The risk of developing breast cancer increases with age. The majority of breast cancer cases occur after age 50. Cancers often develop slowly over time. Therefore, breast cancer is more common among older women.

The risk for women who have a breast biopsy depends on many factors, including age at first live birth and family history. The relationship of these two factors in white women is shown in the relative risks table below.
Women who first menstruate before age 12 have a slightly increased risk of breast cancer. Levels of the female hormone estrogen change with the menstrual cycle. The slightly higher risk of breast cancer in women who begin menstruating at a very early age may be due to their longer lifespan under the influence of estrogen.
Having one or more first-degree relatives (mother, sister, daughter) with breast cancer increases a woman's likelihood of developing breast cancer.
