No preparation is required for a mammogram. During the mammogram, the breast is gently compressed between two sheets for a few seconds. Therefore, a mammogram is recommended when the breasts are least tender, especially for women with sensitive breasts. The week following the end of the menstrual period is when breast tenderness is least. There is no correlation between the day of the menstrual period and the quality of the mammogram.

During the mammogram, the woman is naked from the waist up. Therefore, it is recommended to wear a two-piece garment to the exam. This allows for easy removal from the waist up during the exam. Avoid applying deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion to the underarms, as these can affect the imaging.
